CCLC celebrates the life of a formidable young campaigner

We are devastated by the loss of a formidable young campaigner, Aisha Hamzat, who passed away suddenly at the end of 2022.

As well as studying at university and working with several different organisations and youth representative bodies, Aisha was employed by CCLC as a Youth Rights Trainer and policy ambassador.

Aisha campaigned for the rights of children in care and care leavers, and particularly for migrant children in care. She used the power of her personal experiences as a looked after child and of growing up in the UK undocumented to fight for those who had little voice themselves. She knew that language had power, and studied to make full use of that power to help other young people.

Aisha had huge reserves of courage, passion and determination, and these qualities shone out from her every day. She made personal sacrifices to benefit children and young people she had not met and would not meet.

Aisha’s loss will be felt deeply by her colleagues at Coram Children’s Legal Centre. We were lucky to know her and are proud to have worked alongside her to make the world a fairer place.

You can read some of Aisha’s story and learn about a cause which was important to her in our Taking Care report, here.
